About the Psychedelic Rock genre

The 13th Floor Elevators brought psychedelic rock into the mainstream with their 1965 debut, though The Charlatans were working in similar territory slightly earlier. What started as a fringe experiment quickly caught the ear of established acts like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, who steered their own catalogs toward more exploratory sounds. Love, Cream, Vanilla Fudge, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, and Pink Floyd all built their reputations on psychedelic foundations during the latter half of the decade.

The sonic toolkit became standard: electric guitar with effects pedals, Hammond and Farfisa organs, bass, and drums, often with processed or heavily manipulated vocals. This framework proved so elastic that it spawned immediate offshoots like space rock and acid rock, while also feeding directly into hard rock, heavy metal, and progressive rock. Neo-psychedelia resurfaced in the 1980s through bands like Spacemen 3 and Loop, and the template remains active in contemporary acts such as The Warlocks, The Black Angels, and Dead Meadow.
