Psychedelia emerged as a defined sound in the mid-1960s, when artists began using non-naturalistic production techniques to destabilize listening experience. Extreme stereo spatialization, reversed and phased tape recordings, heavy reverb, flanging, and extensive overdubbing became the toolkit.
