Progressive rock evolved from psychedelic rock and jazz fusion, reaching peak popularity through the 1970s and early 1980s. The genre's defining characteristic was its rejection of verse-chorus simplicity in favor of complex arrangements, extended instrumental passages, and thematic depth. Many bands embraced concept albums that told unified stories or explored grand overarching ideas, while others created instrumental pieces that showcased compositional ambition. Symphonic prog became the most recognizable sound within the movement, exemplified by albums like Close to the Edge by Yes and Selling England by the Pound.

The genre fragmented into numerous subgenres including Canterbury scene, Krautrock, symphonic prog, progressive metal, and psychedelic rock, each with distinct regional and stylistic characteristics. While progressive rock's mainstream popularity declined sharply during much of the 1980s, it resurged in the early-to-mid 1990s and has maintained a dedicated collector base ever since. The genre's technical complexity and pioneering use of synthesizers made it influential far beyond rock circles, shaping everything from video game soundtracks to alternative hip-hop production, with acts like Kanye West sampling material from prog classics.

Neo-progressive bands continue recording and touring for faithful audiences, keeping the genre's traditions alive decades after its commercial peak.
