The distinction between electromechanical and purely electronic instruments matters to collectors tracking the evolution of the sound. Early electromechanical devices like the telharmonium and Hammond organ gave way to true electronic instruments such as the Theremin and synthesizer, fundamentally changing what was possible in the studio and on stage. These tools shifted from novelty to the core of musical expression.

Today electronic music encompasses a sprawling range of styles across both art and popular music contexts. Experimental forms like musique concrete and computer music exist alongside techno, house, trance, electro, breakbeat, drum and bass, electropop, and synthpop. The genre's defining feature remains consistent: electronics function as the creative center, not merely as a means to an end. This distinction separates electronic records from the vast majority of modern music that uses electronics in service of other sonic goals.
