About the Heavy Metal genre

The first wave of heavy metal bands like Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, and Deep Purple established the sonic template: maximum volume, distorted guitars, and unapologetic heaviness. By the mid-1970s, Judas Priest stripped away blues influences and emphasized raw power, while Motörhead injected punk rock speed and aggression. The New Wave of British Heavy Metal, anchored by Iron Maiden, crystallized the sound into something leaner and more precise, and by the late 1970s heavy metal had built a dedicated global fanbase of metalheads and headbangers.

The 1980s split the genre into competing commercial and underground directions. Glam metal acts like Mötley Crüe dominated mainstream rock radio and MTV, while thrash metal bands such as Metallica brought extreme speed and technical complexity into the mainstream. Simultaneously, death metal and black metal developed as more visceral underground movements. Since the 1990s, nu metal (blending grunge and hip hop elements) and metalcore (fusing extreme metal with hardcore punk) have continued expanding what falls under the metal umbrella, making it one of rock's most durable and adaptable families of sound.
