Jazz took shape around 1915 in the American South, built on African musical foundations including blue notes, call-and-response, improvisation, polyrhythms, and syncopation mixed with ragtime's swung phrasing. The term itself arrived as West Coast slang before gaining currency in Chicago around 1915 as a descriptor for the music emerging from that scene. European popular music traditions also shaped the form, giving jazz its harmonic vocabulary and structural flexibility.

From the 1910s forward, jazz fractured into distinct regional and stylistic branches. New Orleans Dixieland defined the early sound, while swing dominated the 1930s and 1940s big band era. The mid-1940s brought bebop's faster tempos and harmonic complexity, followed by Latin-jazz fusions that drew from Afro-Cuban and Brazilian sources in the 1950s and 1960s. Jazz-rock fusion emerged in the 1970s, merging electric instruments with improvisational frameworks, and subsequent decades saw acid jazz and other hybrid approaches cement the genre's capacity for reinvention.
