About the Garage Rock genre

Garage rock emerged between 1963 and 1968 as a direct response to the popularity of surf rock and British beat bands like the Beatles. Young musicians across the US and Canada formed groups that produced local and regional hits, mostly distributed through AM radio airplay. As psychedelic rock gained traction, some garage bands incorporated new sonic textures, but by decade's end the rise of more refined rock styles made garage rock less visible on commercial charts.

The genre wasn't called garage rock during the 1960s. Critics in the early 1970s retroactively defined the sound, with the 1972 compilation album Nuggets becoming instrumental in preserving and shaping how listeners understood the style. American critics of that era used the term punk rock for garage music, marking the first use of that label before the punk movement itself adopted it in the mid-1970s. By the 1980s, garage rock had become the accepted name, though terms like proto-punk and frat rock also appear in collector circles.

A full garage rock revival took hold in the 1980s as bands deliberately returned to 1960s aesthetics and raw production values. This evolved into garage punk by blending the original sound with punk attitude. The 2000s saw garage-influenced groups emerge from the post-punk revival, several reaching mainstream audiences. The genre continues to attract musicians and collectors drawn to stripped-down, do-it-yourself approaches to recording and performance.
