About the Classical genre

The term itself is relatively recent. Though the music dates back centuries, the label classical music did not emerge until the early 19th century as a way to canonize the output from Bach through Beethoven as a foundational golden age. The Oxford English Dictionary first recorded the phrase around 1836, establishing the terminology collectors still use today.

European classical music's defining characteristic is its notation system, refined since the 16th century. Staff notation allows composers to specify pitch, tempo, meter, rhythm, and execution with precision, leaving minimal room for the improvisation and ornamentation common in Indian classical music or traditional Japanese forms. This prescriptive approach distinguishes Western classical from most non-European art music and popular traditions.

The postwar era reshaped how classical music fit into commercial culture. As corporate-driven popular music rose to dominance, it carried an image of youthful rebellion against European formalism, pushing classical into the background of mainstream markets. This shift fundamentally altered how the music was consumed and collected, though the catalog itself remained vast and essential to understanding Western musical tradition.
