Experimental

Experimental music emerged from mid-twentieth century compositional practice as a space for unpredictable sonic outcomes and boundary-pushing work. The genre encompasses everything from John Cage's chance-based procedures to hybrid approaches that blend disparate styles and incorporate unorthodox techniques outside traditional musical norms.
About the Experimental genre
The tradition took shape primarily in North America starting in the mid-1900s, with composers deliberately designing works whose final form couldn't be predetermined. This ran counter to classical composition's controlled methods, introducing indeterminacy and improvisation as compositional tools. John Cage became the most influential figure in this movement, establishing practices that would influence generations of artists across multiple disciplines.
Beyond Cage's approach, experimental became a broader descriptor applied across genres and styles. It covered early computer-controlled composition in the late 1950s, electronic music, and musique concrète, as well as transethnic fusions mixing recognizable genres. Musicians adopted the term when incorporating unconventional ingredients or hybrid approaches that resisted categorization. Over time, music journalism used experimental as a catch-all for work departing from tradition, whether intentionally radical or simply difficult to classify within established frameworks.
