About the Folk Rock genre

The Byrds crystallized the sound with Roger McGuinn's jangly electric 12-string guitar work, while also drawing inspiration from The Beatles' fusion of folk and rock elements. Bob Dylan's influence ran equally deep, with folk-influenced songwriting becoming as central to the style as traditional folk material itself. This American foundation spread quickly, establishing folk rock as a viable commercial format by the mid-1960s.

The British iteration took a distinctly different path starting in the late 1960s. The Pentangle and Fairport Convention deliberately layered traditional British folk music onto electric arrangements, spawning what became known as electric folk or British folk rock. This impulse extended across Europe, with Alan Stivell fusing Breton traditions with Irish and Scottish roots, while Steeleye Span represented traditionalists embracing rock-level amplification. These developments spawned Celtic rock as a distinct current, with bands drawing from Irish, Scottish, and Cornish musical traditions while maintaining close ties to folk sources through the first half of the 1970s.

The genre remained rooted in European and North American folk traditions, though its boundaries have always been fluid. Folk rock could lean heavily toward either end of the spectrum depending on the artist's emphasis on instrumentation, vocal approach, or source material. What distinguished folk rock from blues-based rock or world music classifications was this specific engagement with European and North American folk heritage, a distinction that has shaped how collectors and historians approach the genre ever since.
