About the Symphonic Metal genre
The genre emerged in the 1990s when early death and gothic metal bands began incorporating symphonic elements as core compositional tools. Therion pioneered the approach by featuring fully live orchestras in their recordings and structuring their material around classical music principles, gradually moving away from their death metal origins. This established the template for what symphonic metal would become: heavy instrumentation filtered through a classical lens.
In 1997, Nightwish and Within Temptation released their debut albums and solidified the genre's direction. Within Temptation drew from gothic metal's approach to synthesizing multiple genres, using simpler harmonic ideas centered on Sharon den Adel's vocal presence and classically influenced keyboards with minimal male vocal backing. Nightwish adopted a style closer to power metal in its energy and melodic drive while maintaining the same commitment to female vocals and heavy keyboard orchestration.
Musically, symphonic metal keyboards carry the most technical and complex responsibilities in the arrangement, often mimicking orchestral instruments or supported by actual orchestras in live settings. Guitar and bass follow patterns established by gothic metal, synthesizing elements from black metal, death metal, power metal, and progressive metal alongside classical passages.
