The genre splits into two distinct streams: a guitar-driven approach championed by Helloween and Blind Guardian, and a more melodic variant defined by Stratovarius and its keyboard-forward arrangements. American power metal leans toward the guitar-oriented side, while European bands draw freely from both traditions. The early 1990s brought Gamma Ray, Angra, and Iced Earth into the fold, each carving out lasting collector interest. The breakthrough wave arrived in 1997 when Hammerfall, Rhapsody, and Edguy released debut albums simultaneously, followed by mainstream crossover from Nightwish and Dragonforce at the turn of the century.

Musically, power metal runs on fast drums and bass lines in sixteenth or eighth notes, paired with slower chord changes that create harmonic density. Guitar solos are standard in virtually every track. Most bands deploy two guitarists, keyboards for orchestration or atmosphere, and a vocalist, typically a male tenor singing in an elevated range. Key figures like Kai Hansen, Michael Kiske, Hansi Kursch, Timo Tolkki, Andre Matos, and Jon Schaffer shaped the genre's technical and compositional standards. Lyrically, power metal favors fantasy narratives and battle-era themes, though the genre accommodates diverse subject matter. Note that in the US, the term was historically applied to what modern collectors call speed metal, a distinction worth keeping in mind when hunting early pressings and catalog entries.
