Ska punk emerged from the late 1970s and 1980s underground, though it didn't reach peak commercial visibility until nearly two decades later. Fishbone and Oingo Boingo pioneered the early fusion, but Operation Ivy proved the template that other bands would build from. The core instrumentation typically includes electric guitar, bass, drums, brass like trombones and trumpets, saxophones, and sometimes organ, creating a fuller sound than standard punk allows.
The genre splits into two distinct approaches. The punk-leaning side emphasizes faster tempos, heavy guitar distortion, and aggressive vocals with punk-style choruses, while the ska-influenced variant leans into cleaner production and more developed horn arrangements.
