About the Ska genre

The original Jamaican ska scene dominated the island's music in the early 1960s before the style crossed the Atlantic and found an audience with British mods. The genre's first wave reflected its island roots, featuring that distinctive rhythmic push-pull between bass and percussion that made it immediately recognizable on dance floors and radio.

Ska experienced a major revival when the 2 Tone movement emerged in England during the late 1970s, anchored by bands that stripped the sound down and added social commentary to the upstroke guitar attack. This revival led directly into the third wave ska movement that took hold in the 1980s, when American and European bands reinterpreted the Jamaican template through punk, reggae, and new wave lenses. Since then, musicians have continued expanding the genre into ska punk, ska jazz, ska metal, and numerous other directions, proving the format remains flexible enough to absorb whatever energy collectors bring to it.
