The movement took shape around a shared frustration with the constraints of earlier jazz styles. Ornette Coleman and Cecil Taylor led the charge in the '50s with their innovative approaches, followed by John Coltrane's ventures into freer territory later on. Eric Dolphy, Albert Ayler, Archie Shepp, Bill Dixon, and Sun Ra each developed their own distinctive responses to these same impulses, making the movement remarkably varied despite its unifying philosophy.

Free jazz musicians were often described as playing 'outside' or 'out', terminology that reflected how far they moved from conventional harmonic language. Some collectors hear the music as experimental and avant-garde; others interpret it as an attempt to reconnect jazz with its spiritual and African roots. The movement itself went by several names during its early years including 'energy music' and 'The New Thing', reflecting the fluid and evolving nature of what was being created.
