Swing solidified as a style by 1935, combining elements that gave it broad appeal across listeners and dancers. The format relied on a anchoring rhythm section that locked in the groove while brass and woodwind sections pushed the melodic content. Bandleaders built their sound around skilled soloists who could improvise new material within the arrangement, creating something fresh each performance while keeping the ensemble tight.

The danceable character of swing music made it different from earlier jazz forms. Trumpets, trombones, saxophones, and clarinets became the voice of the era, often layered against violins and guitars. The "lilting" swing time rhythm gave the music its name and its appeal: the verb "to swing" itself became shorthand for playing with strong rhythmic drive and groove. This was the sound of American popular music at its most vital, from mid-1930s ballrooms through the postwar years.
