About the Saxophone genre

Adolphe Sax patented the instrument in 1846, releasing it in two separate series of seven instruments each. The B♭ and E♭ series, designed for military band use, became the standard and remains the most common configuration for saxophones in circulation. The alternative C and F orchestral series saw far less adoption and is rarely encountered by collectors today.

While the saxophone found its initial home in military band music, its sonic character made it ideal for the emerging jazz and blues traditions of the early 20th century. The instrument's presence became central to big band arrangements and early rock and roll, where its distinctive voice cut through ensemble textures. Beyond popular music, a substantial body of classical concert works exists for the saxophone family, ensuring its relevance across both commercial and art music spheres.
