Pink Floyd formed in London in 1965 around Syd Barrett's vision of psychedelic rock with philosophical depth. Their first album, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn (1967), arrived as one of Britain's earliest psychedelic statements, but Barrett's mental health struggles led to his departure in 1968. David Gilmour stepped in, and the remaining four members shifted toward concept-driven work that would define their reputation.
Roger Waters emerged as the band's principal lyricist and conceptual architect through the 1970s, steering the release of their most commercially successful albums: The Dark Side of the Moon (1973), Wish You Were Here (1975), Animals (1977), and The Wall (1979). The Wall spawned a 1982 film adaptation that won two BAFTA Awards. These records established Pink Floyd as album-first artists who treated each release as a complete statement rather than a vehicle for singles, though tracks like Money and Another Brick in the Wall (Part 2) achieved radio play. Internal tensions fractured the lineup by the mid-1980s, with Wright departing in 1981 and Waters in 1985, leaving Gilmour and Mason to continue the band name through A Momentary Lapse of Reason (1987) and The Division Bell (1994). A 2005 Live 8 reunion brought the surviving members together briefly. The Endless River (2014) assembled unreleased material from The Division Bell sessions, marking their final studio effort.
By 2013, Pink Floyd had moved over 250 million units worldwide, with The Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall among the best-selling albums in history and inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. They were recognized by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996 and the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2005.
