Cool jazz took shape after 1945 when Californian jazz musicians, predominantly white, migrated to New York and connected with the city's bebop scene. Rather than chase bebop's aggressive tempos and harmonic complexity, these musicians drew from Lester Young's approach to create something cooler and more compositionally minded. The style emphasized intricate arrangements, innovative forms, and through-composed structures that maintained sophistication even within improvised passages.

The sound developed through several distinct approaches. Gil Evans and Gerry Mulligan, working with the Michael Tower Orchestra, explored softer emotional textures by introducing instruments like french horn and tuba to jazz contexts. Lennie Tristano took a different path, maintaining fast tempos and pure improvisation while demanding a pure, melodic tone from his players like Lee Konitz and Warne Marsh. The clearest statement came through Miles Davis's Birth of the Cool sessions from 1949-1950, released in 1957, which brought together Davis, Evans, Mulligan, Konitz, John Lewis, Gunther Schuller, and Johnny Carisi in a collective project that initially sold poorly but aged into a jazz standard.

Cool jazz shifted westward and became closely tied to the California scene, particularly through The Dave Brubeck Quartet's Time Out in 1959, which reached number two on the Billboard Pop Albums chart. The style's influence extended into bossa nova, modal jazz as heard on Miles Davis's Kind of Blue from 1959, and even free jazz through Jimmy Giuffre's trio work in 1961-1962.
