About the Metalcore genre

Metalcore took its first real shape in the mid-1980s New York hardcore scene, where bands like Cro-Mags, Leeway, and Judge began pulling from metal bands such as Venom, Motörhead, Celtic Frost, Metallica, and Slayer. The early 1990s saw artists like Starkweather, Integrity, Ringworm, Earth Crisis, and Rorschach expanding the fusion into more extreme territory, establishing the sonic template that would define the genre for collectors today.

By the mid-1990s, metalcore had fractured into distinct regional and stylistic branches. The technical side developed through bands like Deadguy, Lethargy, and Candiria, who blended noise rock, post-hardcore, and jazz fusion elements before mathcore pioneers Botch, The Dillinger Escape Plan, and Converge took those ideas further. Meanwhile, Belgium's H8000 straight edge scene pushed death metal and thrash metal integration through Congress and Liar, while Germany's Bremen scene developed a fragmented, dissonant approach through Acme, Systral, and Carol.

The late 1990s brought melodic metalcore into focus through Massachusetts bands Shadows Fall, Killswitch Engage, and Unearth, who drew influence from the Gothenburg melodic death metal scene, while Poison the Well and Shai Hulud explored the melody spectrum from a different angle. This accessibility opened metalcore to wider audiences by the 2000s. Contemporary collectors are seeing renewed collector interest through bands like Knocked Loose, Code Orange, and Jesus Piece, who represent a return to traditional metalcore's uncompromising approach.
