About the Alternative Metal genre

The roots run deep into the American rock underground. Bands drew from hardcore punk (Biohazard, Corrosion of Conformity), noise rock (Helmet, The Jesus Lizard), grunge (Alice in Chains, Soundgarden), and industrial (Ministry, Nine Inch Nails). Rather than forming a unified movement, alt-metal bands shared a willingness to merge traditional metal guitar work with sounds and ideas from outside the genre entirely. Jane's Addiction borrowed from progressive rock, Living Colour brought in funk elements, and Faith No More combined progressive rock, funk, and hip hop into their mix. Primus similarly blended progressive rock with funk sensibilities.

Vocal approaches varied widely across the catalog. Bands like Staind, Helmet, and Soundgarden leaned on traditional singing, while Static-X and Nothingface employed growls, screams, and yelling. This diversity meant collectors in the 1990s could grab records from System of a Down, Mudvayne, Kittie, or Drowning Pool depending on whether they wanted experimentation layered over brutality or something closer to melodic delivery. The genre never solidified into one sound, which partly explains why it attracted listeners already familiar with alternative rock rather than just metal diehards.
