About the Hardcore genre

The hardcore umbrella emerged from punk rock in the late 1970s and early 1980s, with bands radicalizing punk's ethos by amplifying anger and tempo in both music and lyrics. From there, the term spread across genres: hardcore hip hop drew from boom bap production to pair aggressive vocals with street narratives, while New York hardcore evolved from punk and Oi influences before absorbing metal techniques in the 1990s. The working-class and brotherhood themes that defined the NYC scene remain central to the style.

Metalcore represents one of the most significant branches, fusing hardcore punk, New York hardcore, crossover, and groove metal around the breakdown as its core device: an extremely heavy, rhythmic section designed to hit hardest during a song's peak aggression. Mathcore then pushed that formula into rhythmic complexity and sound experimentation. Deathcore merged metalcore's breakdowns and palm muting with death metal's blast beats and aggression, creating constant tension between slow and fast sections. Beyond metal, gabber and nu style gabber carried hardcore's intensity into electronic music, with distorted bass drums and tempos ranging from 160 to 300 BPM.
