About the Dance genre

Dance music's definition is straightforward: compositions written to facilitate or accompany dancing. The genre names often mirror the dances themselves, whether a Viennese waltz, tango, bolero, salsa, or any of the regional jigs and breakdowns that emerged from folk traditions. Sometimes the dance came first and musicians named the music after it; other times, a musical form spawned a new style of movement. The relationship between name and form remains fluid across centuries of practice.

Today, collectors encounter dance music across wildly different contexts. On one end, you have classical and traditional recordings: dance suites, minuets, and historical ballroom sides. On the other, electronic and commercial forms dominate the category, with house, techno, disco, electro, and hip-hop all functioning as dance music in clubs and at parties.
