Nightwish is a Finnish symphonic metal band that emerged from Kitee in 1996, blending classical orchestration with metal intensity. Keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen drives their songwriting, and the band has cycled through three lead vocalists since formation, each bringing distinct character to their massive international catalog.
About Nightwish
The band started tight with keyboardist Holopainen, guitarist Emppu Vuorinen, and vocalist Tarja Turunen, then solidified into their classic lineup with drummer Jukka Nevalainen and bassist Sami Vänskä after their 1997 debut. Albums like Oceanborn (1998), Wishmaster (2000), and Century Child (2002) built a devoted following, but Once (2004) was the watershed moment, moving nearly a million copies and anchoring their US presence with "Wish I Had an Angel" on MTV and film soundtracks. The single "Sleeping Sun" got re-recorded for the 2005 compilation Highest Hopes: The Best of Nightwish, signaling the band's maturation as a catalog act.
When Turunen exited in 2005, Anette Olzon took over in 2007 alongside the 2007 album Dark Passion Play, which sold close to two million copies with "Amaranth" becoming a European radio fixture. Imaginaerum followed in 2011, and Olzon's departure in 2012 led to Floor Jansen's arrival in 2013. Drummer Jukka Nevalainen stepped back after battling insomnia since 2014, with Kai Hahto becoming official in 2019. Bassist Marko Hietala exited in January 2021, replaced by Jukka Koskinen in August 2022. Nightwish has shipped over ten million records worldwide, earned more than sixty gold and platinum certifications, and was inducted into the Finnish Music Hall of Fame in 2018 as the eleventh member. The Groove Hunter currently tracks 8 editions across their catalog, including pressings of Decades, Decades: Live In Buenos Aires, Yesterwynde, Human. :Ii: Nature., the purple remaster of Once, and Endless Forms Most Beautiful.
