About Metallica

James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich founded the band after Ulrich's advertisement attracted Hetfield to join. Their early work on Megaforce Records, starting with Kill 'Em All in 1983, established them within the underground metal scene. The addition of Kirk Hammett as lead guitarist in place of Dave Mustaine solidified the classic lineup. Master of Puppets arrived in 1986 as a watershed moment for the band and the genre itself, followed by ...And Justice for All in 1988, which earned their first Grammy nomination. Bassist Cliff Burton's death in 1986 led to Jason Newsted joining the band through their most commercially successful period.

Metallica's self-titled 1991 album, known as The Black Album, marked a deliberate shift toward accessibility and wider radio play, becoming one of the best-selling records in US history. The 1990s saw the band explore Load and Reload, incorporating alternative and hard rock elements before returning to covers with Garage Inc. and collaborating with the San Francisco Symphony on S&M. The early 2000s brought St. Anger during a turbulent period documented in the film Some Kind of Monster, followed by Robert Trujillo replacing Newsted on bass. Death Magnetic in 2008 signaled a return to their thrash metal roots and coincided with their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction. Recent releases including Hardwired...to Self-Destruct, Lulu with Lou Reed, and 72 Seasons continue their touring legacy.
