Coltrane came of age musically in Philadelphia after relocating there during World War II, studying at the Ornstein School and absorbing the city's vibrant jazz scene. His first significant work arrived in the early 1950s playing with Dizzy Gillespie's septet, though personal struggles with addiction interrupted his momentum. When Miles Davis hired him in 1955, Coltrane's career accelerated, and by 1960 he established himself as a bandleader with a distinctive voice on both tenor and soprano saxophone. His recordings from this period, including Giant Steps (1959), My Favorite Things (1960), and Olé (1961), demonstrate his appetite for harmonic innovation and his command of the tenor's upper register.
The classic quartet he led in the early 1960s alongside McCoy Tyner, Elvin Jones, and Jimmy Garrison produced some of jazz's most substantial work. A Love Supreme (1964) remains his commercial peak, a spiritual meditation that balanced accessibility with his restless harmonic mind. His final years saw increasingly experimental recordings as he collaborated with his wife Alice Coltrane, pushing into free jazz territory that divided listeners then and now. Despite his death at 40, the combination of his prolific output, extensive sideman recordings reissued under his name, and posthumous releases created an enormous discography that continues to be mined and reissued.
