About the Nu Jazz genre

The style took shape across the early 1990s as affordable electronic music software made it possible for jazz and electronic musicians to meet in the middle. Rather than a single sound, nu jazz encompasses two main approaches: producers like Amon Tobin and St Germain who sampled and chopped jazz sources into club-ready grooves, and ensemble acts like The Cinematic Orchestra and Jaga Jazzist who recorded live jazz with electronic textures woven throughout. The compilation series Saint-Germain-des-Prés Café helped bring the sound to wider audiences around the turn of the century.

Nu jazz developed from the intersection of jazz fusion, IDM, downtempo, drum and bass, and breakbeat, borrowing the performance intensity and live groove of jazz while staying rooted in electronic production. The genre shares DNA with acid jazz but leans more electronic than funk-based. From the early work of acts like Fila Brazillia and Jazzanova through contemporary producers incorporating glitch hop and wonky influences, labels like Ninja Tune and Brainfeeder have remained central to the sound's evolution since the 2010s.
