Electro emerged in the early to mid 1980s as producers and DJs discovered the possibilities of the Roland TR-808 drum machine alongside nascent sampling technology. The style is defined by syncopated 808 patterns that echoed the funk breaks found in Hip Hop production, paired with simple funky basslines and synthesizer arrangements. Vocoder vocals delivered in deadpan style became a signature element, emphasizing the mechanical character at electro's core. Though many foundational electro tracks share DNA with Hip Hop, the genre also functions as pure electronic funk.

Electro occupies a crucial position in electronic music history, linking the 1970s work of groups like Kraftwerk directly to the techno developments of the 1980s and beyond. The genre's initial commercial peak was relatively brief, but its sonic vocabulary became too useful to abandon. Its influence persists across nearly every contemporary electronic dance music subgenre, with producers regularly incorporating or hybridizing electro elements into their own work.
