About Tom Waits
Waits emerged from the San Diego folk circuit in the early 1970s before signing to Asylum Records in Los Angeles. His first albums, Closing Time (1973), The Heart of Saturday Night (1974), and Nighthawks at the Diner (1975), established him as a songwriter with a novelist's eye for detail. He built a strong following through the late 1970s with Small Change (1976), Blue Valentine (1978), and Heartattack and Vine (1980), each record deepening his connection to vintage American music and urban storytelling.
After marrying Kathleen Brennan in 1980 and leaving Asylum, Waits undertook a sharp artistic turn toward more fractured, textural arrangements. Swordfishtrombones (1983) and Rain Dogs (1985) incorporated influences from Harry Partch, prepared piano, found percussion, and Captain Beefheart's approach to unconventional sound. He began parallel work in theater with director Robert Wilson, composing and performing in musicals including The Black Rider and Alice. This sustained creative experimentation produced Grammy-winning albums Bone Machine (1992) and Mule Variations (1999), while his catalog of standards covers by Bruce Springsteen, Rod Stewart, and others cemented his status as a songwriter of unusual depth.
