Formed in 1988 by Billy Corgan and James Iha, the Pumpkins filled out their classic lineup with bassist D'arcy Wretzky and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin. Rather than embrace the punk foundations of many alternative rock contemporaries, the band constructed a complex sonic palette drawing from gothic rock, heavy metal, dream pop, psychedelia, progressive rock, shoegaze, and grunge. Corgan's lyrics and compositional ambitions became the driving force, delivering what critics termed cathartic, anguished material rooted in intense emotional terrain.

Their 1993 debut Siamese Dream brought underground attention, but Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness in 1995 catapulted them to mainstream dominance, debuting at number one on the Billboard 200 as a double album. The 1998 follow-up Adore peaked at number two, cementing their commercial reach during the decade. Internal tensions, substance abuse, and declining sales prompted a 2000 breakup, though Corgan and Chamberlin regrouped in 2006 for Zeitgeist and subsequent recordings including the Teargarden by Kaleidyscope series with rotating collaborators. A full reunion occurred in 2018, producing Shiny and Oh So Bright, Vol. 1 / LP: No Past. No Future. No Sun., followed by Cyr, ATUM, and the recently released Aghori Mhori Mei, which signals a return to the guitar-driven approach of their 1990s catalog.
