About the Grunge genre

The term grunge itself has murky origins in US slang. Mark Arm of Green River and later Mudhoney is credited with first applying it to music in a 1981 letter to a Seattle zine, criticizing a local band as pure grunge and pure noise. Bruce Pavitt of the influential independent label Sub Pop picked up the descriptor in 1987-88, using it to frame Seattle's emerging sound. What started as a descriptive term for the unkempt, reaction-against-pretension aesthetic of bands like The Melvins and Soundgarden eventually became a genre label for the entire scene.

GreaterSub Pop became the creative hub around which early grunge coalesced in the late 1980s, with bands developing a sound characterized by heavily distorted guitars, shifting song dynamics, and angst-filled or apathetic vocals. Commercial breakthrough arrived in the early 1990s through Nirvana's Nevermind and Pearl Jam's Ten, which catapulted alternative rock into the mainstream and made grunge the dominant hard rock form of its era. The rapid success brought unintended consequences. Kurt Cobain struggled visibly with addiction and fame, dying by suicide on April 8, 1994, and taking Nirvana with him. Pearl Jam boycotted Ticketmaster over unfair practices, effectively removing themselves from US venues for three years. Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, and Screaming Trees all wound down or disbanded by 1997.

Despite the movement's commercial peak and subsequent collapse by the late 1990s, grunge's influence persists in modern rock. Pearl Jam continues with a devoted fanbase compared to Grateful Dead followers, while Nirvana's posthumous releases including Kurt Cobain's Journals and the compilation Nirvana generated major sales. The genre's stripped-down aesthetic and rejection of theatrical excess reshaped expectations for hard rock musicians that remain relevant today.
