Starting with Outlandos d'Amour in 1978, The Police built momentum quickly. That debut reached number six in the UK and introduced "Roxanne" and "Can't Stand Losing You" to collectors worldwide. Reggatta de Blanc followed in 1979 as their first UK number-one album, spawning the singles "Message in a Bottle" and "Walking on the Moon", both hitting number one on the UK charts. The run continued through Zenyatta Mondatta (1980) and Ghost in the Machine (1981), with tracks like "Don't Stand So Close to Me" and "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" becoming staples. Zenyatta Mondatta marked their breakthrough in America, cracking the top five on the Billboard 200.

Synchronicity arrived in 1983 as their final studio album before breaking up, and it became their commercial peak. The record hit number one across the UK, US, Canada, Australia, and Italy, selling over eight million copies in the United States alone. "Every Breath You Take" became their only number-one single on the Billboard Hot 100 and their fifth UK chart-topper. The band disbanded in 1984 at their commercial height, later reuniting for tours including a major world tour from 2007 to 2008. Their total sales exceed 75 million records, with multiple albums appearing on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums list and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003.
