About the New Wave genre

New wave started as a fairly narrow descriptor for bands that took punk's energy but added lyrical complexity and instrumental polish. Artists like Elvis Costello, The Pretenders, Blondie, and The Jam shared values of anti-racism and skepticism toward Thatcher-era politics, with reggae and ska revival providing rhythmic and ideological backbone alongside the punk foundation. By the early 80s, the genre had absorbed influences from roots reggae, dub, early Beatles recordings, and world music, creating something distinctly internationalist in outlook.

The arrival of synthesizer-based acts like New Order, Human League, and Depeche Mode created friction among purist new wave collectors, but the boundary dissolved quickly as traditional new wave bands adopted electronic technology and synth acts incorporated reggae-influenced production and socially conscious lyrics. What defined new wave across its diversity was the marriage of catchiness to eccentricity, clear melodic hooks paired with quirky styling and artistic ambition. The genre achieved major commercial traction in the 1980s, partly driven by MTV exposure, though by mid-decade the distinctions between new wave and surrounding genres had begun to blur.
