The Cars were a Boston-based new wave and power pop outfit that emerged in 1976 with a sharp, synth-driven sound and radio-friendly hooks. Their debut album defined the late 70s new wave aesthetic, while their 1984 resurgence with Heartbeat City proved their staying power across two decades.
About The Cars
The Cars formed after several lineup changes, settling on the five-piece that would record their self-titled debut in 1978: drummer David Robinson, bassist and vocalist Benjamin Orr, rhythm guitarist and vocalist Ric Ocasek, lead guitarist Elliot Easton, and keyboardist Greg Hawkes. Signed to Elektra Records, they became fixtures on FM radio and MTV, with their first five albums reaching platinum status. Their self-titled debut became one of the best-selling records of the 1970s, holding the Billboard album charts for over a year.
After a quiet period in the early 1980s, The Cars returned with Heartbeat City in 1984 and dominated MTV with "You Might Think," "Magic," and "Drive," the latter reaching number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. A 1985 greatest hits compilation added another chart success with "Tonight She Comes" hitting number 1 on the Rock Tracks chart. The band dissolved in 1988 following the Door to Door album, though members pursued varied paths: Ocasek became a producer for acts like Weezer and No Doubt, while Easton joined touring bands. The surviving members reunited in 2010 to record Move Like This. The Groove Hunter tracks 6 editions across The Cars, Greatest Hits, Moving in Stereo: The Best of, Heartbeat City, Candy-O, and The Cars in black vinyl.
