The band evolved from Lennon's earlier group The Quarrymen, cutting their teeth in Liverpool and Hamburg clubs before manager Brian Epstein shaped them into a professional unit. Producer George Martin's involvement proved crucial as they signed with EMI and scored their first hit with Love Me Do in late 1962. The phenomenon known as Beatlemania followed, and by early 1964 they had become international stars, central to the British Invasion of the American pop market.

After stopping live performances in 1966, The Beatles focused entirely on studio work, releasing a succession of albums that redefined what records could be. Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, The Beatles (the White Album), and Abbey Road showcased their rapid stylistic evolution from beat group to psychedelic experimenters to studio craftsmen. These records helped establish the album as the primary format in popular music and influenced public interest in Eastern spirituality, electronic music, and visual presentation. The band dissolved in 1970, with no full reunion occurring despite posthumous projects and partial collaborations in later decades.

The Beatles remain the best-selling music act ever with over 600 million units sold, holding 20 number-one singles on the US Billboard Hot 100 and numerous Grammy Awards, Brit Awards, and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction.
