Talking Heads formed in New York City in 1975 as a post-punk outfit that bridged art rock, funk, and world music into something distinctly their own. Led by David Byrne's angular vocals and visual intensity, they spent the late 1970s and 1980s building a catalog that rewired how rock bands could absorb African and funk influences without losing their experimental edge.
About Talking Heads
The band started when David Byrne, Chris Frantz, and Tina Weymouth reconnected in New York after studying together at the Rhode Island School of Design, with Jerry Harrison joining shortly after to complete the core four. Their 1977 debut Talking Heads: 77 arrived fully formed, and their collaboration with producer Brian Eno on More Songs About Buildings and Food, Fear of Music, and Remain in Light pushed them further into funk and world music territories, drawing from Parliament-Funkadelic and Fela Kuti. By the early 1980s they expanded their live and studio operations with musicians like Adrian Belew, Bernie Worrell, and various singers and percussionists who helped create their most recognizable sound.
The 1983 album Speaking in Tongues and the single Burning Down the House marked their commercial peak, followed by the Jonathan Demme-directed concert film Stop Making Sense in 1984. Little Creatures in 1985 became their best-selling release, and they continued through the worldbeat-influenced Naked in 1988 before disbanding in 1991. After the split, Frantz, Weymouth, and Harrison reunited briefly as the Heads in 1996 with the album No Talking, Just Head, bringing in guest vocalists to carry the material.
The Groove Hunter catalog tracks 11 editions across their discography, including Little Creatures, Stop Making Sense, Talking Heads: 77, Remain in Light, and the Rhino Records pressing of Speaking in Tongues, along with demo and live material like Tentative Decisions and Boarding House 1978.
