Born in Harlem in 1930, Rollins came up through the bebop scene of the late 1940s, recording early on with Babs Gonzales and then pivoting to harder-swinging contexts. He played alongside Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, and Thelonious Monk during the early 1950s, establishing himself as a saxophonist with distinctive harmonic sensibilities and rhythmic independence. After breaking a heroin habit through methadone treatment in 1955, Rollins entered what many consider his most productive period, joining the Clifford Brown and Max Roach quintet and launching his career as a bandleader.

Saxophone Colossus, recorded in June 1956 with Max Roach on drums and Tommy Flanagan on piano, stands as his most enduring statement. The album introduced listeners to St. Thomas, a Caribbean-influenced composition built on a calypso rhythm that would become a signature element of Rollins's approach. Critic Gunther Schuller's 1958 analysis of the extended blues solo Blue 7 from this session helped establish Rollins's reputation as a musician whose improvisations worked from rhythmic and motivic development rather than simply embellishing chord changes. His use of repetition and variation within restricted pitch ranges, punctuated by sudden flourishes, gave his solos architectural clarity that influenced generations of improvisers.

Rollins recorded prolifically across the late 1950s and 1960s for Prestige, Blue Note, Riverside, and Contemporary, exploring both standard jazz fare and his own original material. His compositional output provided the jazz repertory with lasting standards including Oleo, Doxy, and Airegin, each with distinct character and harmonic shape.
