Billy Corgan and James Iha started the band after meeting in a record store, initially relying on a drum machine before bringing in Chicago jazz drummer Jimmy Chamberlin. The Pumpkins set themselves apart from many punk-influenced peers through their structural approach: powerful loud-to-soft-to-loud dynamics layered across intricate guitar arrangements. Corgan's songwriting ranged widely in emotional tone, from the anger of X.Y.U. to the quietude of Disarm to the brightness of Cherub Rock, giving their catalog substantial depth.
The band's run through the 1990s positioned them as one of the decade's most critically acclaimed acts, but their later years saw internal fractures and instability. When Adore arrived as their fourth album, Jimmy Chamberlin's temporary absence for drug rehab brought electronica influences into the mix, a direction that persisted even after his return for Machina/The Machines of God. These pressures, combined with conflicts between members and label struggles, contributed to their 2000 dissolution. Their final album, Machina II/The Friends And Enemies of Modern Music, received only 25 signed vinyl copies in 2000 before bootleg digital transfers circulated among fans. The band reunited in 2007 with Corgan and Chamberlin as core members, adding Jeff Schroeder, Ginger Reyes, and Lisa Harriton. They released Zeitgeist to mixed reviews that year and have remained intermittently active since.
