The band formed after Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament, veterans of Green River and Mother Love Bone, began working with guitarist Mike McCready following Andrew Wood's death in 1990. A demo tape reached Eddie Vedder through drummer Jack Irons, and Vedder's lyrics and vocal contributions secured his place as lead singer. Pearl Jam's first live performance occurred on October 22, 1990, at the Off Ramp Cafe in Seattle, and the group signed to Epic Records after initially performing as Mookie Blaylock.

Their debut album Ten, released August 27, 1991, contained songs such as Alive, Even Flow, and Jeremy that addressed depression, violence, and isolation. Though commercial success built gradually, the album eventually became one of the best-selling rock records of its era and charted on the Billboard 200 for nearly five years. The Jeremy music video achieved extensive MTV rotation and won multiple awards at the 1993 MTV Video Music Awards. Pearl Jam toured constantly in support of Ten and became known for intense live performances, appearing on Saturday Night Live and MTV Unplugged in 1992.

The band's subsequent albums Vs. (1993), Vitalogy (1994), No Code (1996), and Yield (1998) each brought stylistic shifts and commercial success. In 1994 Pearl Jam became publicly involved in a Ticketmaster dispute over service fees and anti-competitive practices, eventually testifying before Congress and boycotting affiliated venues for several years. The 1998 cover of Last Kiss became one of their highest-charting singles, with proceeds supporting Kosovo War refugees. Following a devastating crowd crush at the Roskilde Festival in Denmark during their 2000 European tour, the band canceled remaining dates, an event that shaped their approach to touring. The Groove Hunter currently tracks 11 editions across the Pearl Jam catalog, including Yield, Vs. Clear, Ten, Vitalogy Vinyl Edition (Remastered), No Code, and both volumes of Rearviewmirror Greatest Hits 1991-2003.
