Osbourne rose to prominence as Black Sabbath's lead vocalist starting in 1968, appearing on the band's first eight studio albums including the genre-defining "Black Sabbath" and "Paranoid" (both 1970) and "Master of Reality" (1971). The band's darker, blues-influenced approach to heavy rock established the template for metal's sound. Internal tensions and substance abuse led to his dismissal in 1979, but his tenure with Sabbath earned him induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006 and again as a solo artist in 2024.
His solo career began immediately after leaving Black Sabbath, with "Blizzard of Ozz" (1980) achieving multi-platinum success. The partnership with guitarist Randy Rhoads on "Blizzard of Ozz" and "Diary of a Madman" (1981) produced some of metal's most recognizable instrumental work before Rhoads' death in 1982. Osbourne continued through the 1980s with albums like "Bark at the Moon" (1983) and "The Ultimate Sin" (1986), establishing himself as a solo force while periodically reuniting with Black Sabbath.
Osbourne released thirteen solo studio albums, with his first seven achieving multi-platinum certification in the United States. His final concert took place in July 2025 at Birmingham's "Back to the Beginning" event before his death that same month.
