Oasis formed in Manchester in 1991 with Liam Gallagher on vocals, but took shape once his older brother Noel joined as guitarist and primary songwriter. After signing to Creation Records in 1993, they released Definitely Maybe in 1994, a record that hit number one in the UK and became the fastest-selling debut album in British history at the time. Their second album, (What's the Story) Morning Glory?, arrived in 1995 and cemented their dominance, spending ten weeks at UK number one during the high-profile chart battle with Blur and eventually becoming the third-best-selling album in UK chart history.
The band's commercial peak came with their 1996 Knebworth performances, where they drew 125,000 fans each night for what were then the largest outdoor concerts in UK history. Be Here Now (1997) sold heavily on release but divided critics. Founding members Paul Arthurs and Paul McGuigan departed in 1999 and were replaced by Gem Archer and Andy Bell. Oasis continued through the 2000s with Standing on the Shoulder of Giants (2000), Heathen Chemistry (2002), Don't Believe the Truth (2005), and Dig Out Your Soul (2008), though none matched the cultural impact of their earlier work. Noel's departure in 2009 ended the band; Liam and Noel pursued separate careers before the group reformed in 2024.
Oasis have sold over 75 million records worldwide and hold eight UK number-one singles and eight UK number-one albums to their name. They won six Brit Awards and received the Outstanding Contribution to Music award in 2007.
