Britpop is British alternative rock that emerged in the early 1990s as a direct response to American grunge dominance. Built on reverence for 1960s and 1970s British guitar music, the movement positioned acts like Oasis, Blur, and Pulp as keepers of a distinctly British sound and sensibility.
About the Britpop genre
Britpop developed from the UK independent music scene as bands rejected the inward-looking aesthetics of grunge and shoegaze. The movement drew from earlier British scenes like Baggy and Grebo, which had merged indie and punk with electronic elements, but Britpop moved in a more regressive direction, prioritizing mainstream appeal and 1960s revivalism over experimental counterculture. Oasis and Blur, both originally working in indie-dance styles, soon abandoned those electronic aspects for classic songwriting approaches rooted in Beatles and Kinks influence.
As Britain's economy improved through the 1990s, mainstream audiences embraced guitar-driven music with cash to spend on records, and Britpop exploded into cultural dominance. While most of the scene followed accessible pop-punk and songcraft formulas, acts like Radiohead and Mansun pushed the sound toward progressive rock and experimental territory. The movement became the musical core of Cool Britannia, a broader British cultural phenomenon that achieved commercial reach beyond the UK, particularly in America and Japan.
By decade's end, Britpop's commercial appeal and formulaic nature worked against its longevity. Press attention shifted to rawer garage rock revivals and more experimental acts, and the movement largely fractured. Collectors hunting Britpop vinyl will encounter pressings from the movement's peak years in the mid-to-late 1990s, when major labels invested heavily in these bands' releases, making original editions and reissues a significant part of the post-punk and alternative rock catalog.
