No Doubt formed in Anaheim in 1986 as a ska punk outfit and became one of the defining bands of the 1990s. Gwen Stefani's vocals and the band's ability to shift between punk energy and pop accessibility made them essential collectors' items across multiple formats and pressings.
About No Doubt
The group started as a three-piece ska band but solidified their classic lineup with guitarist Tom Dumont and drummer Adrian Young after original vocalist John Spence's death in 1987. Their first album landed in 1992 to little fanfare, overshadowed by grunge. The band self-released The Beacon Street Collection in 1993-94 while between record label support, a rawer document of their punk roots. Once Interscope committed to them again, Tragic Kingdom arrived in October 1995 and became a cultural juggernaut, selling over 15 million copies worldwide. The single Don't Speak, rewritten by Gwen around her breakup with bassist Tony Kanal, anchored the album's success.
Return of Saturn in 2000 marked a tonal shift toward softer, more introspective rock material with less ska influence, though it underperformed commercially despite earning devoted collector interest. The band pivoted again on Rock Steady in December 2001, integrating reggae and dance-rock production with Mark Stent and Major Lazer collaboration. Singles like Underneath It All and Hey Baby became worldwide club hits. No Doubt entered a lengthy hiatus after 2003, during which Gwen Stefani launched a successful solo career. The band reunited for touring in 2009 and returned to the studio in 2010 with producer Spike Stent to develop Push and Shove, drawing from ska, 80s new wave, and Jamaican reggae influences.
