About Nirvana

The trio of Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic, and drummer Aaron Burckhard began rehearsing material from Cobain's Fecal Matter tape in late 1987. Their first single, a cover of Shocking Blue's 'Love Buzz', arrived in November 1988 on Sub Pop. The raw, stripped-down approach carried into their June 1989 debut Bleach, produced by Jack Endino, which established their sound within the Seattle underground.

When Dave Grohl joined as drummer in 1990 and the band signed to DGC Records, Nirvana entered the studio with producer Butch Vig. Nevermind arrived in September 1991 and sold over 30 million copies worldwide, reshaping the commercial landscape for alternative rock. In Utero followed in September 1993, recorded with Steve Albini, and debuted at number one despite Cobain's intent to distance the band from mainstream attention. Their MTV Unplugged performance that same year, featuring collaborations with the Meat Puppets, became a touchstone recording released in 1994.

Cobain's death in 1994 ended the band's active run, though their catalog expanded through posthumous releases including the 2004 box set With the Lights Out and its 2005 companion Sliver: The Best Of The Box. The Groove Hunter currently tracks 8 editions of Nirvana releases, including Nevermind, In Utero, MTV Unplugged in New York, and their self-titled album.
