MGMT is the synth-pop and alternative project of Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser, formed at Wesleyan University in Connecticut. Their catalog charts a deliberate shift from accessible synth-pop hooks to increasingly experimental production across five studio albums since 2007.
About Mgmt
VanWyngarden and Goldwasser started as The Management before settling on MGMT and signing to Columbia Records in 2006. Their debut Oracular Spectacular arrived in 2007 with immediate impact, catching attention from established musicians and the music industry at large. The duo maintained the core songwriting partnership while expanding their live band to include rotating members on guitar, bass, drums, and keyboards.
Following the brighter synth-pop of Oracular Spectacular, Congratulations moved toward denser arrangements and experimental production in 2010. The band continued this trajectory with their self-titled 2013 effort, which featured a cover of Faine Jade's Introspection and heavier sonic textures that pushed their audience away from the immediate pop appeal of earlier work. After a hiatus, producer Patrick Wimberly and collaborator Ariel Pink helped unlock a looser approach that resulted in Little Dark Age in 2018, restoring some accessibility while retaining experimental touches.
The band parted ways with Columbia in 2019 and spent four years largely inactive before announcing a return in 2023. Their fifth album Loss Of Life came in early 2024, marking a more contemporary sound direction and their first featured artist collaboration with Christine and the Queens on Dancing in Babylon. The Groove Hunter currently tracks 7 editions across their catalog, including Little Dark Age, Congratulations, Oracular Spectacular, MGMT, and Loss Of Life.
