Mustaine launched Megadeth with Killing Is My Business... and Business Is Good! in 1985 on Combat Records, establishing the band's reputation for complex arrangements. Peace Sells... but Who's Buying? followed in 1986 and cemented underground momentum. Despite battling substance abuse and internal shifts in the late 1980s, Megadeth delivered a string of commercially successful albums including So Far, So Good... So What!, Rust in Peace, and Countdown to Extinction, securing its place alongside Slayer, Anthrax, and Metallica as pillars of American thrash metal.

The band endured constant membership changes with only Mustaine as the consistent anchor. A brief disbandment in 2002 followed Mustaine's arm injury, with the group reforming in 2004. Bass player David Ellefson's departures and returns marked internal tensions that shaped the catalog's trajectory. Megadeth achieved five platinum certifications in the United States and earned its first Grammy Award in 2017 for Best Metal Performance. In August 2025, Mustaine announced that the upcoming album Megadeth would mark the band's final studio work and supporting tour.
