Born in Washington, D.C. in 1939, Gaye started his career with Harvey and the Moonglows before signing to Motown's Tamla label in the early 1960s. He built his reputation on singles like "How Sweet It Is (to Be Loved by You)" and "Ain't That Peculiar", then deepened his profile through collaborations with Diana Ross and Tammi Terrell on tracks such as "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" and "You're All I Need to Get By". These duets showcased his ability to balance his rich baritone with intricate arrangements that became Motown hallmarks.

The 1971 album "What's Going On" marked a turning point, as Gaye secured greater creative control and began exploring topical themes alongside personal introspection. Albums like "Let's Get It On" and "I Want You" refined his approach to soul and romance, while "Here, My Dear" presented a deeply autobiographical work. After relocating to Europe and later signing with Columbia Records in 1982, he released "Midnight Love", which produced "Sexual Healing", a track that earned him Grammy Awards and an American Music Award while demonstrating his continued relevance across decades.

Gaye was killed by his father on April 1, 1984, leaving behind a catalog that reshaped soul music and informed multiple genres.
