Berry Gordy founded Motown Records with an $800 family loan, building the label around a core team of writers, producers, and studio musicians who worked with artists like Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross and The Supremes, The Jackson 5, the Temptations, and the Four Tops. The formula was precise: accessible melodies, rhythmic sophistication, and crossover appeal designed to reach both Black and white audiences during an era when such reach was uncommon for Black-owned enterprises. Songs like My Girl, The Tracks of My Tears, You Are The Sunshine of My Life, and What's Going On became foundational American standards, with Motown generating nearly 200 number-one songs worldwide across multiple decades. The label's influence extended far beyond the 1960s, when the Motown Sound achieved peak global penetration. Those recordings continue to surface in film, television, and advertising, while contemporary R&B and pop artists frequently cite Motown's approach to arrangement and production as formative to their own work.
