Louis Armstrong shaped modern jazz and popular music more than any other instrumentalist of the 20th century. Born in New Orleans in 1901, he shifted jazz from collective improvisation to solo performance and brought his distinctive gravelly voice and scat singing to recordings that became templates for generations of musicians.
About Louis Armstrong
Armstrong came to prominence in the 1920s as an inventive trumpet and cornet player after relocating to Chicago in 1922 to join King Oliver's band. By 1924, he moved to New York and quickly became a sensation among musicians in the Fletcher Henderson Orchestra. Back in Chicago in 1925, he recorded with Louis Armstrong and his Hot Five, creating hits that became foundational models for the first generation of jazz musicians and established him as a soloist of unmatched energy and brilliance.
Throughout the twenties and thirties, Armstrong navigated crooked managers, lip injuries, and mob entanglements while maintaining the respect of musical purists despite his theatrical stage presence. Around the late forties, with stable management, his career shifted toward elder statesman status. He appeared in Hollywood films, toured globally, and achieved a remarkable late-career resurgence. At 62, he became the oldest act to top the US charts when Hello Dolly reached number one in 1964, and four years later he became the oldest artist to record a UK number one with What a Wonderful World.
Armstrong's influence extended well beyond jazz into the broader landscape of American popular music and entertainment. As a performer, his charisma and instantly recognizable voice made him one of the first African-American entertainers to achieve crossover success during a severely racially divided era. Miles Davis later summed up Armstrong's technical legacy: you can't play anything on modern trumpet that doesn't come from him. The Groove Hunter currently tracks 12 editions across his catalog, including The Very Best Of, Wonderful World: The Best Of Louis Armstrong, Louis Armstrong - The Greatest Hits - Limited Color Edition Blue, and The Platinum Collection - Louis Armstrong SET.
