Jane's production foundation comes from early 2010s dubstep and EDM influences like Skrillex and Porter Robinson, skills they honed through membership in SoundCloud collectives like PlanetZero and graveem1nd before transitioning toward trap and digicore sounds around 2018. Their breakthrough came in 2020 with self-released material on SoundCloud, particularly the single 'what's my age again?' which gained traction on Twitter. Their debut album Frailty arrived in November 2021 via deadAir label and earned recognition from Pitchfork, which ranked it at number 47 on their best albums of 2021 list.
In June 2022, Jane announced a significant transition, retiring their previous stage name and publicly transitioning gender. They released 'Royal Blue Walls' that same day and subsequently removed four tracks from their Teen Week EP, which had been released in early 2021. Their second full-length album Census Designated followed in October 2023, building on singles like 'Contingency Song' and 'Lips.'
